1. Geirangerfjord: A UNESCO World Heritage Site

No trip to Ålesund is complete without a visit to the world-famous Geirangerfjord, known as “a majestic gem.” This UNESCO World Heritage site is often touted as one of the most beautiful fjords in the world. As you arrive, likely via Eagle Road, you’ll easily understand why. The journey from Ålesund to Geiranger takes about 2.5 hours by car and includes a scenic drive and a quick ferry ride from Linge to reach this destination. While relatively small, the town is jam-packed with things to do.

Area Highlights (Besides the Beauty of the Town):

Eagle Road: Drive along the Eagle Road, which boasts 11 hairpin bends and offers panoramic views of the fjord from above with various waterfalls. If you’re coming from Ålesund, you’ll likely have experienced this on your drive into Geiranger.

Storfossen Waterfall Walk: Walk up or down the 327 steps while the mighty waterfall cascades alongside the stairway. There are plenty of viewing areas that get you as close as safely possible to the wild, and natural sight. So close, you’ll feel the water mist! The path runs from the town center up towards the Norwegian Fjord Center or vice versa.

Norwegian Fjord Center: The visitor and communication center for the Geirangerfjord World Heritage Area. Here you can find exhibits and learn about the exciting and distinctive fjord landscapes of western Norway.

Fjord Cruise: Hop on a fjord cruise to fully experience the beauty of Geirangerfjord from the water. The cruise sails past the Seven Sisters Waterfall, the Bridal Veil, and the Suitor while learning about the legends and history of these stunning natural formations.

Flydalsjuvet Viewpoint: This iconic viewpoint is equipped with a chair, dubbed “The Queen’s Chair,” and provides an unparalleled view of the fjord. It is one of the best spots for taking those Instagram-worthy photos or simply relaxing in nature.

Dalsnibba Mountain Plateau: This is one of Europe’s highest viewpoints that is accessible by road. Once you reach the top, you’ll be rewarded with a breathtaking panorama of the fjord and surrounding mountains. This is roughly 40 minutes away, one-way, and offers another scenic drive through dramatic mountainous landscapes.

✨ BONUS:

Storsæterfossen Hike: Depending on your preferred interest and how well you manage your time, there is a nearby hike that allows you to walk behind a waterfall. The trailhead is located near Vasterås, roughly 10 minutes from the town center and takes about 1 hour each way. While a short hike, it does have a steady climb so prepare appropriately. Do your research, be mindful of weather, and remember, LNT- Leave No Trace!

I LOVED Geiranger! My only regret was not having more time here. You can easily do the listed activities in a day but you’ll need to plan accordingly due to the ferry schedules. Of course, you can also opt to stay a day or two to take everything in at a slower pace. I unfortunately arrived fashionably late and had to skip the waterfall hike and ferry. Reason enough to return!

In a perfect itinerary, I would suggest driving to Dalsnibba first and then returning to Geiranger. You can then explore town while waiting for your ferry to Hellesylt, and making the return drive to Ålesund from this side, via the Stranda ferry. Be mindful of the ferry times as these routes do not run throughout the night.

2. Trollstigen: The Troll’s Path

For those with a taste for adventure and breathtaking landscapes, a day trip to Trollstigen (The Troll’s Path) is a must. This serpentine mountain road is an engineering marvel, winding through steep cliffs and lush valleys. The actual road consists of 11 thrilling hairpin bends, each offering its own unique perspective of the surrounding mountains and valleys. The drive from Ålesund to Trollstigen takes about 2 hours and has several sights to see along the way to your destination.

Please be mindful that the road itself is closed for summer 2024 due to safety reasons. You can still visit the viewing platform to get the best viewpoint possible and explore the surround areas that will all take your breath away.

Area Highlights:

Gudbrandsjuvet: A viewing deck for a powerful waterfall and beautiful ravine area. There’s a café area where you can ask the local’s about the myth from the 1500’s!

Øvstestølbrua: Rest stop area with an information board explaining the Trollstigen protected area and landscape. Here you can enjoy the gorgeous surrounding landscape, explore the old farmhouse, and take a walk across the bridge that overlooks the Valldøla River.

Trollstigen Visitor Centre: Learn about the history and construction of this remarkable road at the modern visitor center, which also offers spectacular views and a walking path along the edge of the mountain.

Trollstigen Viewing Platform: The viewing platform and walkway not only offers a bird’s eye view of Trollstigen, but also allows you to witness the powerful Stigfossen Waterfall as it cascades down the mountainside.

Trollstigen Road: While closed for repair, the best best spot to see the wild hairpin turns is from the viewing platform.

This was an amazing site to see. I was extremely lucky to experience the road days before it’s closure. Don’t let the road closure stop you from visiting this incredible sight. The drive from Ålesund is stunning with plenty of thrilling sights to see along the way. As you get closer to your destination, you’ll pass through the National Park which is a sight in itself. Also, the best viewpoint of the road is from the platform so you’re not missing much other than a potentially nauseated stomach from all the turns.

3. Runde Island: The Bird Watcher’s Paradise and Largest Puffin Colony South of the Artic Circle

Runde Island, also known as “Bird Island,” is a haven for bird watchers and nature lovers. Just a short drive and ferry ride from Ålesund, you’ll find an island that is home to over 500,000 nesting seabirds, including puffins, gannets, and kittiwakes. The journey takes about 1.5 hours with a ferry connection in Hareid. Once you arrive, there are options to catch a sighting of the the birds from the mountain top, via a short but steep hike, or from the water with tour boats.

Area Highlights:

Runde Enviornmental Center (Runde Miljøsenter): Visit the Enviornmental building to explore the ehibitions and available activities in the area.Serving also as a visitor center, you can stop by the café for food and drink or check out the souvenir shop.

Bird Watching: Visit during the breeding season (April to August) to see puffins and other seabirds in their natural habitat.

Runde Lighthouse: Hike to the historic Runde Lighthouse for stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean and the surrounding islands.

Marine Life: Keep an eye out for seals and otters along the shores, and if you’re lucky, you might even spot a whale or two.

I went in June during breeding season and was not disappointed! I opted for the relatively short, but steep hike up the mountain towards the designated viewing platform. There were quite a few people here, including avid bird watchers with their camo gear and extremely large cameras. Nonetheless there were plenty of viewing areas. Not only did I see the puffins, I had gorgeous ocean views of nearby islands as I also watched the tour boats coming and going. No luck on the marine life, however.

4. Åndalsnes: The Gateway to Romsdalen

Åndalsnes, is even smaller than Ålesund, but by no means is lacking in things to do. Known as the “Alpine Village by the Fjord,” it is the starting point for many of Norway’s most famous hikes and scenic routes. Surrounded by towering peaks and dramatic fjords, it’s a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. The drive from Ålesund to Åndalsnes takes about 2 hours.

Note: Åndalsnes is also a great starting point for many of the listed day trips- especially if you are a hiking enthusiast as there are a ton of trails in this particular area. I initially intended to stay in Åndalsnes for my trip but the limited accommodations in town did not entirely fit my needs for one reason or another.

Area Highlights:

Norsk Tindesenter: Try your hand at climbing at the Norwegian Mountaineering Center, suitable for both beginners and experienced climbers. Here you will find Norway’s second highest indoor climbing wall, a museum, and a restaurant. This building also serves as a visitor center for Reinheimen National Park where you can book various outdoor activities from the mountain to the water.

Romsdalen Gondola: For the easiest way up the mountain, hitch a ride on the Romsdalen Gondola to enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. You can also choose to dine at the Eggen Restaurant on top of the mountain. I recommend making reservations in advance as the tables were sold out when i randomly went.

Rampestreken: For the adventure seekers and fitness enthusiast, enjoy a short yet steep hike leading to a platform that juts out from the side of the mountain. The hike and platform offer spectacular views of Åndalsnes, the fjord below, and even Trollveggen in the distance.

Rauma Railway: Take a ride on the Rauma Railway, one of the most picturesque train journeys in Europe, passing through steep mountains, deep valleys, and over impressive bridges.

Trollveggen (Troll Wall): Roughly 15 minutes from Åndalsnes, you will find Europe’s tallest vertical rock face. Here you can marvel at the sheer cliffs that attract climbers and base jumpers from around the world. Be sure to explore the visitor’s center where you can watch a 14-minute video detailing the dramatic story of the wall and stop at the souvenir shop or cafeteria.

✨ BONUS:

Mardalsfossen: Just under 2 hours from Andalsnes you will find Northern Europe’s highest waterfall. From the parking lot, you can take a short and manageable hike, that is just over a mile to reach the impressive sight. This waterfall is part of a hydroelectric project and is only open from June 20 – August 20.

Litlefjellet Ridge Trail: Hike the more manageable mountain that is said to offer the most views for the least amount of effort. In roughly about 30 minutes, you’ll have reached the top to enjoy the beautiful mountain landscape with the Rauma River winding it’s way through Romsdalen.

• Romsdalseggen Ridge Trail: For the more advanced hikers, you can hike one of Norway’s most scenic trails that offers panoramic views of the Romsdalsfjord, the Troll Wall, and the surrounding mountains.

I was pleasantly surprised with the amount of activities this small town had to offer. I opted for the hike up to Rampestrekken where I proceeded to restaurant and where the gondola arrives. I also visited the Troll Wall which was amazing to see from afar and then up close.

Off the beaten track and less known but equally stunning is Hjørundfjord, a hidden gem that offers tranquility and breathtaking scenery away from the crowds. Surrounded by the majestic Sunnmøre Alps, this fjord is perfect for those seeking a peaceful escape and is truly a national treasure. Norwegian’s have deemed this Norway’s most beautiful fjord. The journey from Ålesund to Hjørundfjord takes about 1.5 hours by car with two short ferry rides from Solvåg and Standal if you drive to the area.

Area Highlights:

Fjord Cruise: Enjoy a leisurely cruise through Hjørundfjord, taking in the serene beauty of the mountains and the crystal-clear waters.

Øye Village: Visit the charming village of Øye, home to the historic Hotel Union Øye, a favorite retreat of royalty and adventurers since 1891.

Sadly, I opted not to do this day trip due to poor weather and opting for Geiranger on another day. I regret not checking it out as I was informed from locals afterwards that this is in fact Norway’s most beautiful fjord and far less crowded.

7. Molde: The Town of Roses

Known as the “Town of Roses,” Molde is famous for its beautiful rose gardens, panoramic views, and rich cultural heritage. A day trip to Molde offers a delightful blend of nature and culture. The drive from Ålesund to Molde takes about 2 hours and requires a ferry connection in Vestnes.

Area Highlights:

Varden Viewpoint: Drive or hike up to the Varden viewpoint for a spectacular panorama of Molde, the fjord, and the 222 snow-capped peaks in the distance.

Molde Cathedral: Visit the striking Molde Cathedral, with its modern architecture and beautiful stained-glass windows.

Retiro Beach: A popular outdoor recreation and swimming area for locals. Here you will find families and friends enjoying the beach, diving tower, fitness equipment or simply just lounging in the grassy area talking story as we say in Hawaii.

Atlantic Road: Drive along the Atlantic Road, one of the most scenic drives in the world, featuring a series of bridges connecting small islands and offering stunning coastal views. This area is roughly a 50-minute drive from the ferry area and town center. You can also take the Scenic Route from Bud that makes the drive about 25 minutes more without the stops along the route.

✨BONUS:

Trollkirka Caves: 40 minutes from Molde, and 25 minutes from the Atlantic Road, you can find Trollkirka, or Troll Church. This no ordinary church though! This hike leads to 3 marble and limestone caves with underground streams and waterfalls for you to explore. It will require you to trek an 1.5 hours up a steep path before scaling a ladder down to the cave area to experience the magical nature of Norway. Sadly, it started raining moments before reaching the parking area so I did not get to accomplish this.

I recommend driving to the Atlantic Road first and then making your return to Molde. You can either take the “quicker” via Eide/Route 64 and return to Molde via Bud or vice versa. I saw the rain coming in and opted for the quick route. This allowed me to explore the short walking path in the Atlantic Road area before the rain came down. Plan accordingly as the Caves trailhead is along this roadway. Weather changes really fast in Norway so be mindful when choosing activities and always have back up plans.

If traveling with public transportation, you can catch the FRAM Express Line 100 (101 for return) that will take you directly from Åndalsnes to Molde. From Molde, you can then select anyone of the designated tours.
